“ Canada is the largest country in the American continent and the second largest country in the world. It covers more then 1 half of the continent of North America and occupies a lot of islands. The largest are: Vancouver in the west; New Scotland and Newfoundland in the east; Victoria in the north. Canada borders on the USA in the south and Alaska in the north-west. In the east there is the Atlantic ocean, in the north the Arctic ocean and in the west the Pacific ocean. Canada is divided into 10 provinces and 2 territories. The territories are The Yukon Territory and The Northwest Territory. The largest province is Quebec. The population there is mostly French speaking.

It covers the area of 10 million square kilometres and has a population of about 28 million. The most of inhabitants live near the US-Canadian borders.
The oldest inhabitants came from Asia. The first Europeans were the Vikings a thousand years ago. In 1497 John Cabot claimed the land for the English Crown. The name Canada comes from the Indian word Kanata which means village or community. Canada became a British dominion in 1867. Now it is a self-governing member of British Commonwealth. Canada has a federal parliament consisting of two Houses: The House of Commons and The Senate. The Queen is represented by Governor General. The real head of state is the Prime minister. He selects his own Cabinet. There are two leading parties in Canada: The Liberal Party and the Progressive Conservative Party.

The capital of Canada is Ottawa, but the largest city is Montreal in Quebec. It has population of about three million. The other important cities are Vancouver, Quebec, Winnipeg, Edmonton,...
The national flag of Canada is red and in the centre there is a white square with a red maple leaf. The Canadian anthem is called Oh, Canada.

Canada is very rich country and it belongs to the G-7 countries. It has many industries(cars, electrical goods, machines, etc.). It’s very rich in minerals. There are large deposits of coal, iron, petroleum, gas, copper, zinc, gold, silver, uranium etc. Canada is one of the biggest producers of zinc, nickel and lead. But its greatest resources are forests. Canada is a major producer of wood and paper. Agriculture is important too. Canada is one of the biggest producers of wheat and Winnipeg is the greatest wheat market in the world."
