"BEDŘICH SMETANA

Bedřich Smetana was born in 1824 in Litomyšl. His father was farmer and his family was very poor. He was one of the best known Czech componists.
When he was 4 years old, he could play the violin. Smetana studied in Jihlava, Německý Brod and then he came to grammar school to Prague. He played the piano and the violin. Smetana liked componist F. Liszt. He listened to his music. He went away from grammar school and his parents were unhappy. Then he lived with his uncle in Plzeň. Here he completed the grammar school. In 1843 Smetana came to Prague. He studied here by Josef Proksch. Then he worked
as a teacher of music. He stablisched music school in Prague.
Smetana married Kateřina Kolářová. They had two children. But they died
and then also his wife. His new wife became Bettina.
He wrote music for Národní listy, too. Very known are his two operas - Prodaná nevěsta and Braniboři v Čechách. Their first night was in 1866. They were very popular. In 1868 Smetana wrote tragic opera Dalibor. The first night hadn´t success. Smetana wrote even for example operas Libuše and Dvě vdovy.
In October 1874 Smetana turned deaf. He heard nothing. He had to live
in Jabkenice in family of his son-in-law, Josef Schwarz. Although he was deaf, he wrote even Má vlast, Hubička, Tajemství, Čertova stěna, Z mého života,… He died in 1884. He is buried in Vyšehrad. Bedřich Smetana is very famous.
He wrote many operas, symphonic quartettes and symphonic poems."
