London is a capital city of the United Kingdom. It is situated on the Thames. There live more than 8 million people, so it´s the most populous city in GB. It is the seat of the Monarch, the Parliament and the Government.

History
The first people who established a settlement on the banks of the river Thames were probably the Celts. Then the Romans invaded the country. They fought with Celts, won and expelled them to the mountain area. After it they renamed the settlement on Londinium. Later, it became the capital city of Britain.
In 1666, the city was destroyed by the Great Fire, but luckily nobody was killed. London was reconstructed, but some buildings were also destroyed during the WW2 bombing.

The city plan
London is divided into 4 parts - the City of London, Westminster, West End and East End. The City of London is the oldest and the smallest part. It´s a business, financial and economical center, there are many banks and offices and the Bank of London is the most important.

Transport
There are several ways how to get to London - by bus, by railway or by plane.
London has an excellent transportation system. Most people prefer the London Underground or Tube, which is the world’s first underground railway for passengers. The city’s bus line is known for its famous red double-decker buses. If you sit on the top deck, you will get a nice view of the sights on your journey. And the black taxicab is also well-known.
