London is situated on both banks at the mouth of the River Thames. London is home to about 9 milion inhabitans. London is one of the largest cities of the world. It occupies an area of 1600 sq kms. It is divided into Old London and 32 districts.
London was founded by the Celts and Romans named it Londonium. Since the time of Edward the Confessor, 1042, London has been the capital of Britain. The original walled city of London was quite small, another city outside London’s walls was city of Westminster. The city continued to grow and flourish beyond its walls to absorb the originally separate Westminster.
Several disasters have afflicted London. In 1665 the Black Plague killed 70 000 people. In 1666 the Great Fire broke out destroying most of the city. Many buildings were also destroyed in the World War 2.
