Úryvek

"Australia, New Zealand

Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia is one of the biggest countries but also the smallest continent on Earth. Australia lies in Southeast Asia, between the Indian and Pacific oceans where we can find the Great Barrier Reef, which is one of Australia's greatest natural attractions and also one of the natural „wonders of the world“. The nearest islands are Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and New Zealand.
Australia was discovered by Dutch explorer - Willem Janszoon. Few years later in 1770 also Captain James Cook reached the coast. Later, in 1788 the British settled there and founded a penal colony. While the Europeans were searching for this unknown land there were already living the original inhabitants called Aborigines. Many of them died in the 18th century when they were protecting their country against the settlers but some of them still remains.
Now Australia is a British dominion. It has a democratic, federal system and the official head of the country is Queen Elizabeth II, represented by the Governor-General.
The climate varies from tropical to subtropical. The temperature can range from below zero in the Snowy Mountains to extreme heat in the north-west. About one-third of the country is made up of deserts like Great Victoria Desert or Great Sandy desert. There is also one special desert with red sand – Ayers Rocks. Besides from deserts, in Australia we can also find savannas and rainforests or forests of eucalyptus. The highest point is Mount Kosciusko (2 228m), which lies in the Australian Alps. In the central Australian Lowlands there is the Great Artesian and the largest lake in Australia – the Lake Eyre Basin. Australia also has other lakes including Lake Torrens and Lake Gairdner. The largest Australian river is Murray, followed by Darling."
