"New Zealand is a country in southwestern Pacific Ocean. Is made up of two large islands, North and South, and many smaller islands. New Zealand consists of two main islands separated by Cook Strait. The total area of New Zealand is 268 680 km ², which is slightly less than Japan and a little more than the United Kingdom. The nearest mainland is 2,000 km distant Australia. Winds blowing from the ocean are kept mild and humid climate, with very strong rainfall on the west coast. In the north of New Zealand is hot and rainy. In the south is cooler. In the middle of the North Island are the volcanoes. Four of them are still active. The highest peak of the South Island is Mount Cook (3754 m). In the east of the Alps is the Canterbury Plain, the largest plane in New Zealand. There in New Zealand grow many flowers which grow nowhere else in the world. There are In New Zealand also many endemic species. The typical animals are kiwi, birds, mountain parrots. Kakapo is the world´s largest parrot and brown emu. There are also penguins. Nobody knows exactly when New Zealand first settled Maorové. The first Europeans, who in 1642 discovered the islands, was the Dutch navigator Abel Janszoon Tasman. In 1840 the British settlers established in the North Island city of Wellington which is the capital. When it was the South Island in 1861 discovered gold, the country was hit by a wave of settlers looking for wealth. The 19th century there were several brutal wars between settlers and Maori. In 1907 New Zealand became an independent state. New Zealand has a modern, prosperous and developed economy. It is a country with high living standard. Its primary export industries are agriculture, fisheries, forestry and information technology. Also important is tourism and export education. Film and wine industries have a great chance of success. New Zealand is an agricultural country. Sheep are the source of the famous lamb and wool, which are exported all over the world. The crops grown include wheat, corn, barley, peas and apples. In a country growing number of vineyards, from which comes a high quality wine. Main trading partners of New Zealand as Australia, Japan, USA and Member States of the European Union, especially the United Kingdom. Film makers often use the countryside for making films. New Zealand was the first country in the world that gives women the right to vote.
