The history of the town goes back to the foundation of Prague Castle. Medieval Prague flourished during the reign of the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia Charles IV. He founded for example the oldest university in Central Europe in Prague, St. Vitus Cathedral, the New Town of Prague and Charles Bridge.
In the 15th century, Prague was a centre of Hussite movement. In 16th and 17th century, it grew thanks to the Emperor Rudolph II.
In 1918, Prague became the capital city of the Czechoslovak Republic, which came to existence after the Austrian-Hungarian Empire fell into pieces. On 1st January 1993 it became the capital of the Czech Republic.

The oldest parts of Prague are Hradčany, the Lesser Town, the Old Town, the New Town and Vyšehrad.

Hradčany
The dominant of the city is the Prague castle. Earlier, it used to be the seat of kings and now, it is the seat of the President. The monumental complex of the castle includes 3 courtyards and over 700 rooms including the Vladislav Hall, the Spanish Hall or the Rudolph Gallery.
St. Vitus´s Cathedral stands close to the castle. Its construction began during the reign of Charles IV. and it took 6 centuries to finish it. "
