"Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and the biggest city in our republic. It is the fourteenth-largest city in the European Union. It´s seat of President, government and parliament and political, economical and industrial centre of our country. It´s also culture centre and centre of industry.There live about 1,2 million people and it is divided into 10 districts. It is very beautiful city with many historical buildings and monuments. It’s sometimes called town with hundred towers because of big count of towers.

It lies in the heart of Europe in the centre of Bohemia on the Vltava River. It covers area of 285 square kilometres.

You have many shopping possibilities there. In the Prague´s centre there are mostly shops with souvenirs for tourists. They can buy there T-shirts or mugs with motives of Prague. For lovers of fashion there are huge shopping malls as Palladium or Arkády.

In the Prague there is very big problem with pollution because there live many people, who have to travel to work by cars. That´s the reason why town hall offers cheap tickets for public transport. Thanks to this the citizens of Prague can save lots of money. Prague is the only city in the Czech Republic where the tube is. I think that it is very big advantage because tube is very fast and travels underground so it can avoid traffic jams. In Prague you can travel by bus, tram, trolley-bus or train as well. There is the biggest airport in the Czech Republic. It´s the Airport of Václav Havel. In the past it was named The Ruzyně Airport.

According to legend duchess Libuše had vision about great city which will be named Prague.
Actually Prague was founded in the 6th century by Slavs.
In the 10th century the Vyšehrad Castle was built as a seat of Přemyslid dynasty.
In the 14th century Charles IV lived there. As King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, he transformed Prague into an imperial capital. at that time Prague was the third-largest city in Europe (after Rome and Constantinople).These were great times for Prague, because he founded Charles University in 1348, he built the New Town and he began construction of the Saint Vitus Cathedral. In 1357 the Charles Bridge was built.
In the 15th century Prague was the centre of Hussite wars which were one of the consequences of execution of Jan Hus.
In the 16th century Prague was the seat of Rudolf II of Habsburg dynasty. He invited famous artists and scientist from the whole world to Prague.
In 1620 there was the battle of The White Mountain where our army was defeated. Due to this the Thirty Years War started.
On the 28th of October 1918 Czechoslovakia was founded and Prague became the capital.
In 1989 the Velvet Revolution crowded the streets of Prague.
In 1993, after the split of Czechoslovakia, Prague became the capital of the new Czech Republic.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Prague is a historical and cultural centre of the Czech Republic because of its monuments, theatres, churches and museums.
Theatres: The National Theatre- it was built in 19th century in the late Renaissance style
-You can visit ballet performances, opera or drama there
- It was decorated by famous Czech artists as Mikoláš Aleš
Estates Theatre- is the oldest theatre in Prague
-it is famous because Mozart conducted the premiere of Don Giovanni
The National Marionette Theatre- is situated in the Old Town
The State Opera- from 1949 to 1989 it was known as the Smetana Theatre
Vinohrady Theatre
The Theatre on the Balustrade
Squares: Wenceslas Square- it is the natural centre of Prague
- It is 750m long and lined with banks, department stores, boutiques,
shops, restaurants, cafés
-At the top of the square there is a bronze statue of St. Wenceslas made
by Myslbek. "
