My Daily Routine
It seems my life is always very full of activities and obligations so I never have much time for
myself. During the week it's the worst. I usually have to get up at half past six even though I
would really prefer to sleep much later. After I get up I perform my morning routine of
washing my face, brushing my teeth, and then deciding what to wear. After I get dressed I
brush my hair. I usually don’t have time for breakfast in the morning because I have to catch a
bus at seven o'clock for my commute to school. The bus is usually completely packed and it
really makes me envy my schoolmates who don't have to ride the bus to school. Classes at
school start at a quarter to eight except on Tuesdays when they start at seven. Each class has
its own timetable so my schedule varies by class. Classes are forty-five minutes long with ten
minute breaks, except for one "long" break between the second and the third classes, which
is twenty minutes long.
My classes take place either in our classroom or in various labs or a gym. After our classes the
students usually go for lunch to the canteen. Some students in their third and forth year have
afternoon classes, seminars, optional after-school activities or driving lessons.
After school I sometimes go shopping or just walk around the town for a while. When I get
home I like to relax for some time, I listen to the radio, watch television, and maybe get a
little snack. Then I start my homework or help with some housework. Before I know it, the
afternoon is gone and it is evening.
In my family, we usually eat dinner at about seven o'clock. At dinner we discuss what
happened during the day and catch up with each others' lives. After I help clean up the dinner
dishes I either take a shower or have a bath myself. Then I have some time to watch the TV
news. Sometimes I watch an interesting film or music program on TV or a video. Sometimes I
like to go downtown to see a movie or to go to a concert with my friends. About every other
day a I have a date with my boyfriend. Sometimes he comes to watch TV at my home or we
might go out for a walk. I usually manage to go to bed around eleven PM.
So this is my daily routine during the week. At the weekend it is a different story, I like to
sleep late and do whatever I wish with my free time. I am still expected to help my parents out
around the house but I still have most of the time for myself and my interests. I can go for a
trip with my friends, I can visit my relatives or I can devote more time to my hobbies. I think
everyone will agree that weekends are much better than weekdays.

Cultural Life in Our Country
In the Czech Republic there are many ways how to introduce ´culture’
into one’s life.
Going to the cinema is perhaps the most popular and easiest, because
cinemas are in every town and also in many villages. Watching films on a big screen has always
attracted people. In America, where film industry is a big business, famous actors and actresses
earn millions of dollars. American films make perhaps two thirds of all films shown in our
cinemas, because big Hollywood film studios make one film after another like in a factory.
Foreign films are either dubbed (by good Czech actors) or they are shown with subtitles
and the spectators can enjoy a film in its original language.
There are many types of films: action films, thrillers, comedies, science fiction films, historical
films, romances, fairy-tales, westerns, horrors, cartoons. Some film directors are very good and
famous, e.g. Steven Spielberg (´Jaws´), George Lucas (´Star Wars´), James Cameron (´Titanic´),
Miloš Forman (´Amadeus´), Ridley Scott (´Gladiator´) etc.
Recently many excellent Czech films have been made in our country. Czech film art has a
long tradition and Czech films are always welcome in our cinemas. Some of them are watched
abroad. The best known example is perhaps film ´Kolja´ by Zdeněk Svěrák which got an Oscar
in America as the best foreign film.
In the theatre you can see real actors acting or singing and every
performance is a unique piece of art. People in the theatre are not the spectators
(like in the cinema), but the audience. It is sometimes necessary to book tickets
in advance. People usually dress up when they go to the theatre. You can see
plays (e.g. Romeo and Juliet), musicals (Dracula) or operas (Carmen). In the
theatre you sit either in the stalls (downstairs), or in the circle (upstairs).
In Frýdek-Místek there is no theatre, so our citizens must go to Ostrava
or Český Těšín if they want to enjoy a live performance. Prague has many good
theatres and some are really famous, e.g. the National Theatre, the Stavovské
Theatre, the Laterna Magica, the Semafor, the Na Zábradlí.
Going to concerts also belongs to cultural life. Some prefer classical
music, others pop music, rock music, folk or jazz. Classical concerts are
usually held in beautiful concert halls. Rock concerts often need more space –
for the fans and also for the sound – so they are held at large sports stadiums.
Folk fans like to sit on a large meadow while listening to their star.
And sometimes it is easier, safer and more comfortable to listen to your
favourite singer at home, from a CD player.
Art lovers can visit various exhibitions in art galleries or museums. There they can see
paintings and sculptures, old furniture, fine porcelain, folk clothes or perhaps exotic art from
distant places.
Reading books is also an important part of cultural life. In our country there is a large
network of libraries, where one can borrow books and read them. Unfortunately, reading books
is a disappearing leisure time activity as the younger generation prefers watching TV and reading
information on the internet.

Canada

Canada is still a British dominion. It means that the British Queen is still the official head of the country, although the country is governed by a Governor-General and Canada today is more influenced by the USA than by Britain.
Canada is the second largest country in the world. It lies on the North American Continent and has only one neighbour: the USA. It is surrounded by three world oceans – the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Arctic Ocean. The west of the country is mountainous, there are the Rocky Mountains and the Mac Kenzie Mountains, in the north there is the Arctic lowland.
The biggest rivers are the Mac Kenzie River and the Yukon in the west and the St. Lawrence River in the east – it was here, along the St Lawrence, where the first Europeans (the French) settled many centuries ago.
Canada is a country of many lakes. The best known are Great Bear Lake, Great Slave Lake, Athabasca Lake, Reindeer Lake, Winnipeg Lake – when covered by ice they provide good conditions for Canadian national sport – ice-hockey. Winters are very cold in Canada and many winter sports are popular here. A part of the border with the USA goes through four Great Lakes in the south: Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Erie and Ontario. Also half of the famous Niagara Falls (between lakes Erie and Ontario) belongs to Canada.
Canada was originally a French colony (called New France) and so now there are two official languages: French and English.
Canada consists of 10 provinces and two territories (Yukon Territory and North-West Territory).
The country is rich in oil, gas and wood. It is also the largest producer of wheat.
The population is only about 26 000 000 inhabitants. The density of population is very low because the climate in Canada is arctic, which means: very cold. Only the Eskimos (Inuits) – the original inhabitants of Canada - are able to live in the hard conditions in the northern parts of the country. Most Canadians live on the south within 200 kilometres from the US border as the climate there is much better, surprisingly with temperatures up to 30 Celsius in summer.
There are all large and important Canadian cities situated – Montreal, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton, and Calgary.
The capital city is Ottawa, a modern city in south-eastern Ontario. It became the capital city because there were too many political quarrels between Montreal, Toronto and Quebec city.
The famous NHL (National Hockey League) was formed in 1917 by five Canadian teams. Later, in 1924, the first US team joined the League and now NHL is the strongest league in North America with 26 teams (e.g. Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Montreal Canadians, New York Rangers, etc.) The teams compete in the Stanley Cup every year to decide which is the best team.
Canada is also famous for its “mounties“ – police members who work on horseback (the Royal Canadian Mounted Police).

A car – Transportation by car
Advantages: The car is the most popular means of transport. It was invented by German
engineers (Benz, Daimler). Henry Ford was the first to produce cars downmarket.(masově)
He developed the assembly line (montážní linka) technique of mass production of inexpensive
cars. Travelling by car is very common and popular although petrol is not really cheap in our
country.
Many people have their own cars and they can drive them when and where they want to.
Driving your own car is comfortable and it gives you freedom. You can stop to have a rest
whenever or wherever you like. You can take as much baggage as you like. The life would be
impossible without a car. But it may be tiring for the driver; you can’t stretch your body or
walk for a while as you can on a train.
It may be dangerous because you may have the car crash, have a flat tyre, the car may break
down, strike / bump and you might be fined for illegal parking or speeding, i.e. (id est - to
jest) you have to pay a fine. To drive a car we must get a driving licence and know the traffic
rules and traffic signs well. One of the rules says that cars are to be driven on the right side of
the road. However, people drive on left in Great Britain, India and Australia.
Disadvantages:
- you may have a car accident, car crash, a flat tyre (prázdná pneumatika)
- die on the road, to be killed in a car accident
- to be injured in a car accident
- roads may be jammed (a traffic jam – dopravní zácpa)
- cars may break down, strike, hit something, crash or bump into something
- expensive petrol
- transportation causes the pollution (polluted air and water), smog
- exhaust fumes (gases) are harmful to human health - chemicals evaporate (are released) into
the atmosphere and form dangerous substances
- exhaust emissions contain toxic gases: nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO)
- harmful effects to the environment (air and water are polluted by cars), e.g. spilled oil can
contaminate the groundwater
- carbon dioxide (CO2) causes the so-called “greenhouse effect” - global warming
- problems with scrapped cars (vyřazené auto, šrot)
Driving experience: The majority of young people want to drive a car. The people must be
18 to drive a car in the Czech Republic. They have to have, of course, the driving license.
They attend a car school and learn how to drive a car. They also learn all traffic rules. At the
end they have to pass through write-exam and then through the driving test."
