• Main centre - Brussel (called the capital of EU) is a seat of European Commision - cares about proposing legislation and upholding the treaties and Council of European Union - represents the EU member states and decide which nation became a member.
• Strasbourg (France) is the official seat of the European Parliament - divided into upper and lower houses
• Luxembourg is the location of the European Court of Justice, the European Commission and the European Investment Bank as well as other European institutions.
• The European Central Bank found in Frankfurt (Germany)
• President of the Council - Herman van Rompuy
• President of the Commision - José Manuel
History
• fostered after WWII as the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) - "a first step in the federation of Europe", a 1958 six-country economic cooperative.
• founding members of the Community - Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany.
• In 1957 - these countries signed the Treaty of Rome, created the European Economic Community (EEC) . They also signed another treaty on the same day creating the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) for co-operation in developing nuclear energy (Both treaties came into force in 1958)
• On 1 July 1967 was created a single set of institutions for the three communities - were collectively referred to as the European Communities.
• In 1979, the first direct, democratic elections to the European Parliament were held.
• In 1985 was signed the Schengen agreement, it leaded to open borders without passport controls.
• The re-named 1993 European Union we know today is a product of the collapse of communism."
