BASIC FACTS
Area
It has an area of 78,000 square kilometres.
Population
There are a little over 10 million people living in the Czech Republic and they are mainly Czech. The top three immigrant groups are Ukrainians, Slovaks and Vietnamese.
Capital
Prague is the largest city and the country´s capital. It is a popular tourist destination with a population of 1 million inhabitants. Some popular sites in Prague are Prague Castle, Charles Bridge or the Old Town Square.
Large cities
The second largest city is Brno, located in Moravia. Other important cities include Ostrava, České Budějovice, Olomouc and Plzeň. České Budějovice and Plzeň are internationally famous for their beers. Karlovy Vary is a famous spa town.
Government
• The Czech government is a parliamentary democracy with two houses: the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
• The president is the head of state and is in charge of appointing the prime minister, who is the head of government.
• The president serves a five-year term; deputies serve a four year term. The president is elected directly by the people.
Flag
• The Czech flag was first adopted in 1918 as the flag of the newly established Czechoslovakia.
• It consists of a horizontal white band above a red band (traditional colours of Bohemia and Moravia) and a blue triangle. The blue triangle originally represented Slovakia, but it was kept as a part of the Czech flag even after the split of Czechoslovakia.
Economy
• The Czech economy is primarily export based, with industries like automotive, high-tech, glass and ceramic production, metal and electronics. "
