Geography
The UK consists of two large islands in Atlantic ocean– Great Britain and Ireland and a lot of smaller islands for example – the Isle of Man, the Hebrides, the Orkneys or the Shetlands. The country is separated from the north-west coast of Europe by the English Channel, the Strait of Dover and the North Sea.
Surface
There are hilly and flat areas. The main mountain regions are Cornish Heights (in south-west England), the Cambrian mountains (in Wales), the Pennines, and the Cheviot Hills, which creates a border between Scotland and England. The highest mountains are the Highlands of Scotland with the highest peak Ben Nevis which heights 1342 meters.
The longest river is the Severn, other big rivers are the Thames, the Avon and the Clyde (in Scotland). Scotland is full of beautiful lakes, the most well-known is Loch Ness (Nessie monster is said to live there). The Lake District is mountains region in north-west England which is famous for Lake Poets (a group of poets from the 19th century, for example, William Woodsworth).
Climate
Climate is mild because of the Gulf Stream. There is often foggy and rainy weather. The word smog has its origin in the UK – it‘s a mixture of smog and fog.
Population
The population is about 60 million people. The density is one of the highest in the world. The biggest cities are London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol and Glasgow. British society is multiracial and multicultural. The main language is British English (it differs from American English in grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary). In Wales, some people speak Welsh and in Scotland and Northern Ireland some people speak Scottish or Irish Gaelic. "
